Start and Finish:

Distance: 15.05 km

Ascent: 978 m

Time: 6 hours

Timings are approximate and depend on the individual. Calculate the time using Naismith’s Rule and factor in your own pace.

Before You Walk up Snowdon, ask yourself – Are you equipped? Do you know what you’re doing? Are the conditions safe? If you answer no to any of these, stay safe, don’t go! Check the weather forecast and make sure you know about walking up Snowdon in the Snow. If you lack experience – hire a Snowdon Mountain Guide.

Facilities:

Pubs and cafes are plentiful in Beddgelert.

Either the Snowdon Sherpa or the Welsh Highland Railway.

Hazards:

Navigation and descent of Moel Lefn can be tricky in mist.

Walking up Moel Hebog from Beddgelert

Moel Hebog is Beddgelert’s own mountain. An ascent of Moel Hebog, along with the satellite summits of Moel yr Ogof and Moel Lefn makes the perfect companion to Snowdon for a full weekend’s walking. At 782m high, it’s not the loftiest peak, but it’s still a worthy day out.

The route starts off steadily from the village, near the WHR station, following the easy Lon Gwyrfai trail for the first section. It then sets off steadily uphill, before steepening as you ascend higher. If you expect an easy path, you’ll be disappointed, with the path being steep in places.

After a few false summits, you’ll finally reach the summit, and the views make it worth it.

From the summit, there’s still plenty of great walking ahead. The steep grassy descent to Bwlch Meillionen isn’t one of them, but the views across to Moel yr Ogof certainly is. Moel yr Ogof is famous for Ogof Owain Glyndwr (Owain Glyndwr’s Cave) which can be found by heading right from the bwlch. It’s not easy to find, and often an old mineshaft is mistaken for the actual cave.

With the walk continuing through an improbable rent in the crags, the terrain changes again as you emerge in a land of small mountain tarns. The walk continues over the summit of Moel yr Ogof and along the easier summit of Moel Lefn, before a steep descent to Bwlch Sais and on to Bwlch Cwm Trwsgl. It’s a comparative stroll back through the forest to the start, albeit a rather lengthy one!
